How to Actually Get Stuff Done During Summer (Without Turning Into a Productivity Robot)

Alright, so summer break. Everyone thinks it’s gonna be this magical, life-changing stretch of time where you finally, I dunno, become your best self or something. But for a lot of us—students, freelancers, people who just want to vibe—it turns into this weird cycle of “I’m totally gonna be productive!” and then… three weeks later, you’re just mainlining Netflix and doom-scrolling TikTok at 2AM. Been there, done that, got the existential dread to prove it.

So, how do you actually get stuff done and still have fun? Is it even possible? Yeah, kinda. Let’s talk about it.

  1. Dream Up a Summer Vibe, Not Just a To-Do List Don’t just start with a list of chores. That’s boring. Instead, ask yourself: what would make this summer actually feel good? Maybe you wanna finally start that art project, or get fit-ish, or learn to make ramen that doesn’t taste like sadness. Write it down somewhere you’ll see it—journal, Google Doc, heck, scribble it on your mirror in dry-erase marker.

Stuff to think about:

  • How do you wanna feel by September?
  • What habit do you wish you had down?
  • What’s something you’ve always wanted to try but never got around to?

You need a “why,” or else productivity is just busywork. No thanks.

  1. Plan Your Weeks, But Chill a Bit Daily schedules are for robots. Try planning by the week instead. Pick, like, 3 things you wanna do. One habit to focus on. And, because you’re not a machine, a reward for getting through it (solo picnic? fancy coffee? two hours of guilt-free nothingness?).

Sample game plan:

  • Mon-Fri: work on stuff for a couple hours, max. Nobody’s asking for 8-hour days.
  • Weekends: screw it, do whatever. Or reflect a little. Maybe clean your room if you’re feeling wild.

Like, Week 2 could be:

  • Finish two blog posts
  • Update your portfolio
  • Read a book
  • Try waking up before 9AM (lol)
  • Reward: matcha latte picnic in the park
  1. Romanticize Your Work Time (Yes, Really) This one’s honestly underrated. If you make your productive hours feel like a vibe, you’re way less likely to bail. Open your window. Play music that makes you feel like the main character. Stick stickers all over your planner. Drink something cold and bougie. Work in a cafĂ© just because you can.

Some ideas:

  • Study picnics with friends (or just yourself, no shame)
  • Jazz + rain sounds playlist
  • Comfy clothes, always
  • Light a candle if you’re into that

If it feels cute, you’ll do it more.

  1. Learn Cool Stuff (For You, Not School) Don’t wanna feel like you’re back in class? Learn something you actually care about. Like, obsessively. Maybe it’s digital art, or learning a new language, or finally understanding what the heck crypto is (or not, that’s valid too).

Hot tip: Pick ONE thing and stick with it. Track it like it’s a video game quest. Level up.

  1. Morning Routine, But Make It Gentle You don’t have to wake up at sunrise and meditate for an hour (unless you’re into that, in which case, go off). Mornings set the vibe for your day, so do something simple:
  • Open the blinds, let the sun in
  • Cold water on your face, wake up your brain
  • Eat something that doesn’t come out of a bag
  • Journal or read for a few minutes
  • Pick your top 3 things for the day
  • Play a chill playlist

Then get into your focus work for like an hour or two. That’s it. You’re allowed to start slow.

  1. Time Blocks, Not Marathons Ever tried to work for six hours straight in July heat? Yeah, don’t. Use time blocks—work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After a few rounds, take a real break. Get outside, stretch, make an iced coffee, whatever. Your brain will thank you and you’ll actually get more done. Wild, right?

  2. Make a Summer Bucket List (And Sneak in Goals) Make a list of fun stuff—water balloon fights, star-gazing, whatever. But also sneak in some productive goals:

  • Read 3 books
  • Start a blog or YouTube channel
  • Learn to cook a couple new things

Crossing stuff off is the best feeling, trust me. Get artsy with your list if you want—draw, add stickers, whatever floats your boat.

  1. Social Media: Use, Don’t Get Used By Let’s be real: TikTok and Insta will eat your entire day if you’re not careful. You don’t have to quit cold turkey, just set some boundaries. Maybe limit your screen time, follow accounts that actually inspire you, and post your own progress so you feel accountable. Social media can be a tool, or it can be a black hole. Up to you.

So yeah, productivity in the summer isn’t about being a machine—it’s about doing enough to feel proud, but not so much you forget to live a little. Go get ‘em, tiger. Or don’t. It’s summer, after all.
